European Robin

The European robin (latin: Erithacus rubecula, dutch: roodborstje) is a common tiny gardenbird.

This tiny bird is very common especially during the winter months. I don’t know how they do it but the whole summer I don’t really see them and then October starts and they are everywhere. Like the name suggests they live in Europe.

Apparently these birds are pretty chill over in the UK and Ireland, they are good friends with the farmers there. On the other side of the pond however it’s a different story. Over here they are a bit more shy because we killed them en mass for some reason. That traumatized them so they are still scared of humans today. Sad!

This bird is red because they have anger issues. They fight almost anything the same size as them, even their own reflection. There are stories from people hearing pecking on their windows. Turns out its just a robin trying to fight their mirror version.

They are associated with winter because that’s when you see them most of the time. They are also however associated with it because in Britain the postmen wore red and were called robins. Because a lot of post gets delivered around Christmas this robin association stuck around.
