The western barn owl (latin: tyto alba, dutch: kerkuil) is a popular owl species.
The most popular part about this bird is probably their face. Thery have a distinct pale face which looks like a heart. It also kinda looks like a cut in half apple, with the eyes being the seeds. The western barn owl lives in Europe and Africa while other versions of the barn owl appear in Asia and America.
I have never seen this bird, which is a shame. They are very pretty. They hunt at night, except in Britain, and I don’t usually bird at night. Because they are active in the night they have very powerful hearing which they use for hearing small mice in the fields. They also have pretty good eyesight but that doesn't help much when the sun isn’t out.
During their life they usually stick with one partner to have kids with, unless their significant other dies, then they search for a new flame. Their nests are usually inside a hollowed-out area, like tree hollows or abandoned buildings. There they feed their kids and take naps.
I think people like this bird because it’s kind of the cat of the bird world, similar diet, pretty cute, pet-able (to dampen sound while flying they have soft feathers) and nocturnal. I’ve seen some people on twitter have them as pets, don’t know how ethical that is, hope they get enough time outside.
Hope I get to see one of these some day.
